Creating The Right Mood With Energy Saving Lightbulbs

well-lit-bedroomWhether you’re working from home, reading your favourite book, having a romantic dinner with your better half or relaxing in the bath after a hard day’s work, lighting plays an important role in your everyday life.  Considered as important to interior designers as colour, scale and proportion, light can be a powerful tool for transforming your home from dark and dreary to warm and welcoming.  Follow our tips below to create the right mood for every occasion.

Start by welcoming your guests to your home with a well-lit path to your front-door and an inviting entrance.

Once inside, soft, ambient lighting helps to relax people and make them feel at home.  Bulbs with a soft white glow are ideal.  Each room should be lit using layers of light from many different light sources, from chandeliers and ceiling downlights to floor and table lamps.  This way, you avoid creating overpowering shadows, hightlight items of particular interest and entice people through the house room by room.  By having a number of different lights instead of just one bright one you can also select which ones to turn on or off to adjust the light to any occasion.

Pictures can be illuminated from above using a ceiling spotlight and mirrors can introduce light into areas where a light or a lamp is unsuitable.

Don’t be afraid to illuminate the ceilings as well as this gives a sense of height to a room, and if you have any ornate cornicing this will make a feature of it.  Just don’t forget to dust the cobwebs!

This cosy, relaxing lighting should be the standard throughout your home, only altering it to suit specific tasks or occasions.

Light is a great way to create separate areas within a room, such as a study or reading area.  For study or work spaces, bright overhead lighting complemented by focused task lighting at your desk or work area is ideal to help you concentrate and remain motivated.  Use lamps in the places you like to read.  A floor lamp behind you is perfect as it’s high enough to shine on the pages without getting into your eyes.

For a more romantic setting avoid overhead lighting.  Lamps with shades in dark or warm colours will give the feeling of intimacy and privacy.  Low-level warm coloured light bulbs simulate candle light and are more flattering.

The best piece of advice we can offer is to enjoy experimenting with light in your home using the tips above.  You’ll know when you’ve cracked it because it will just feel… right!
